Lord Shiva is considered to be premier Deity of Hindus. Adi Shankaracharya
has written quite a few stotras (songs of worship) on Lord Shiva. Many known
and unknown scholars have also expressed their adoration for Lord Shiva with
their own poetic verses. However among all stotras, the one written by
Pushpadanta became very popular.
Pushpadant was a mighty king but got curse due to his misdeed by Lord Shiva.
In order to make the Lord happy, he created this stotra. In the verses lie
stories about various great acts of Lord Shiva. Not many know that the
famous Sanskrit shloka ‘Asiti Girisamam…...’ which means ‘if an ocean is
made the inkpot, the branch of Parijat tree is made pen and Goddess
Saraswati herself write the glory of Lord, it is impossible to fully
comprehend the greatness of Lord Shiva’ – is among the verses of this stotra.
Known as Shiv Mahiman Stotra, this magnificent verse has 43 shlokas in
Sanskrit. For the benefit of Gujarati people, Shri Yogeshwarji has
translated it into simple and easy-to-understand Gujarati language.
It is interesting to know that Gujarati translation of Shiv Mahimna Stotra
was completed by Shri Yogeshwarji in the year 1949. When Yogeshwarji first
visited Amarnath – the famous pilgrim place of Lord Shiva in 1951, he
offered this stotra to Lord Shiva along with ‘Amarnath Stuti’ and was
blessed with the divine vision of the Lord.
For the information of readers, Ashit and Hema Desai, famous Gujarati singer
duo has composed an audio cassette ‘Vande Sadashivam’ containing
Yogeshwarji’s Gujarati rendering of Shiv Mahimna Stotra, Shiv Stuti (also
written by Yogeshwarji) & Amarnath Stuti.
