Shri Yogeshwarji

(15 August 1921 - 18 March 1984)

Shri Yogeshwarji

At Dashrathachal

Dashrathachal, situated at a height of 7000 feet was an ideal place for strenuous sadhana. Yogeshwarji started observing maun for the most part of day and spoke with Champakbhai only when it was inevitable. Champakbhai cooked food during those days and when Yogeshwarji would awake from meditation, they would eat it.

Because of the altitude of the mountain, the winter was very cold yet Yogeshwarji put on only a langoti. On the mountain, there was a scarcity of water. An old, hut-like house was their shelter during those days. They often heard the movement of wild animals outside their room. One evening while they went for a stroll, a wild bear came on their path. There was no way for them to escape. Yogeshwarji had a stick in his hand, so he struck it on a stone with a loud chanting of OM. The bear disappeared.

Yogeshwarji wrote a good number of poems on Dashrathachal. With intense prayer and meditation he had the divine vision of Lord Ram, Lord Shiva and other accomplished souls. In one amazing experience, Yogeshwarji heard an abridged Gayatri mantra "OM BHARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI DHIYO YONAH" in meditative state.

With a feeling of deep peace and a sort of accomplishment, Yogeshwarji completed memorable stay at Dashrathachal and returned to DevPrayag.

From Shri Yogeshwarji's autobiography

“While proceeding to Dashrathachal, I had two resolutions in my mind. First, to have the realization of God in person and second, the experience of Samadhi. It was my determination to descend from the mountain only after achieving at least one of them."

-------

"It did not take me long for the experience of Samadhi. My mind was immediately engrossed in it.  In the beginning, I lost my body consciousness for 15 minutes, then for half an hour and later on for 4 to 5 hours. My heart was filled with the experience of Advaita, non-duality. I can ascertain from my experiences that even in these times, anyone can have the experience of Samadhi or the divine vision of God."

-------

"There was nobody on the mountain except us. Champakbhai had taken charge of preparing food. He served me affectionately. His sense of service was rare. He was the only witness of my sadhana and self-development during those days. I experience special feeling by recollecting memories of those days."

-------

"While leaving on the mountain, I decided to give up clothes and put on langoti throughout my life. I don't know why, but I gave up the idea later on. I thought that many occasion would come in my life when I had to live and move among the people of the society. So it would be better if I put on simple and nice clothes for the social etiquette. I feel that it was a wise and mature decision. Keeping in mind the social ethics and decency, a person should put on proper dress. Saints and sadhus should understand that true saintliness lies in cultivating morality and piousness and NOT in nakedness. A true detachment lies in withdrawing the mind from all sensual objects and merging the mind in God, but definitely NOT in false illusion of nakedness."
