Shri Yogeshwarji

(15 August 1921 - 18 March 1984)

Shri Yogeshwarji

At Shantashram and Dakshineshwar

Yogeshwarji once again came to the DevPrayag in the holy Himalayas. Chakradharji, an eminent scholar showed him a beautiful place to stay which Yogeshwarji liked at the first sight. It had a small mango grove and a running brook nearby. 30 years ago, an ascetic named Bhartibaba had stayed there; it was his land of penance but was uninhabited since his death. There, Chakradharji cleaned the place and erected a cottage. It was named Shantashram due to the lean river Shanta flowing thereby. That was the place where in later years Yogeshwarji performed strenuous penance for years and achieved an extraordinary spiritual state.

Once, Yogeshwarji received a command in meditation that he should go to Dakshineshwar, the dwelling place of Ramakrishna ParamhansaDev. In a novel experience, a night before Yogeshwarji's departure for Dakshineshwar, an unknown black human figure appeared and embraced him.

At Dakshineshwar, Yogeshwarji's wish was to stay at the premises of the temple but trustees didn't granted him permission. An unknown gentleman named Pulin Babu arranged for his stay at the temple with his acquaintance. During his stay at Dakshineshwar, Yogeshwarji was graced by the darshan of Divine mother.

Yogeshwarji decided to return to Devprayag, but he found himself short of money. In spite of mere days acquaintance, Pulin Babu's wife decided to sell her ornaments.  As if it was not enough, to their surprise Pulin Babu's old friend who betrayed them returned the money. His friend even told that he returned the money as he wanted to serve the mahatma who had come from the Himalayas!

Once at Devprayag, Yogeshwarji decided to visit Almoda ashram of Maa Anandmayee. An inner voice during meditation instructed him that he would not be able to see her, but Yogeshwarji went there only to found that the inner voice was true. Yogeshwarji also received a unique diksha from an unknown ascetic during meditation.

From Shri Yogeshwarji's autobiography

“Shantashram proved to be a blessing in many ways. Here, I was enriched with extraordinary experiences, I got unprecedented peace. My conscience used to experience the same joy as that of home. I myself consider it as a place of pilgrimage, the land of God or Divine. I believe that the contribution of Shantashram was epoch-making."

-------

"One fine morning I had a thought that I would not take food or even water without the darshan of either Ramakrishna Dev or the Mother. With firm determination, I sat outside and wrote bhajans. My eyes were full of tears while singing bhajans. A charming lady came and told me 'Baba, you are coming from a long distance, Isn't it? Your Devprayag is better than this place.'

I wondered how she came to know that I lived at Devprayag. She talked for a while. I asked her 'where do you live?' She told 'My house is very near. I come here daily.' She bowed down and disappeared. I got up and went in the direction but there was nobody. I asked about her to Pulin babu 'Do you know the lady which came while I was singing bhajan in the morning?' To my astonishment, he told 'no such lady ever came here. Only we were listening to your bhajans till the last moment!' I became speechless."

-------

"It was April 19th 1946. During meditation, I had a darshan of a naked ascetic. The flies were buzzing all over his body. When I bowed down to him, he placed his hand on my head and with his other hand he pressed the muladhar chakra on my back. I entered the state of samadhi. I felt as if I received a kind of diksha. I was highly delighted."
