Chapter 01 : Arjuna Vishad Yog

As the armies of Pandava and Kaurava stand poised for confrontation on the battlefield of Mahabharata, Arjuna sees his friends, relatives and teacher on the opposite side. His victory means killing of his own kinsmen, elder and respected ones. Bemused by the possible fallout of the war, Arjuna is gripped by grief and despair. Determined that given a choice, he would rather die than to fight, Arjuna lays down his arms and seeks counsel from his charioteer and friend Lord Krishna.
અધ્યાય પહેલો : અર્જુનવિષાદયોગ
મહાભારતના યુદ્ધમેદાનમાં પાંડવો અને કૌરવોની સેના યુદ્ધ માટે એકઠી થઇ ત્યારે અર્જુને એના પરમ મિત્ર અને સારથી એવા ભગવાન કૃષ્ણને પોતાનો રથ સેનાની મધ્યમાં લેવા જણાવ્યું જેથી તે જોઇ શકે કે શત્રુ પક્ષમાં કોણ કોણ લડવા માટે એકત્ર થયા છે. જ્યારે અર્જુને પોતાના અતિપ્રિય પિતામહ ભીષ્મ, આચાર્ય દ્રોણ અને કૃપાચાર્ય તથા નિકટના સગા સંબધીઓને નિહાળ્યા ત્યારે એનું હૈયું હાલી ઉઠ્યું. એને થયું કે આ બધાને હણીને રાજ્ય મેળવવું એના કરતાં તો નહી લડવું સારું. આમ કહી પોતાના ગાંડિવનો પરિત્યાગ કરી શોકાતુર બની અર્જુન રથમાં બેસી ગયો. ભગવાન કૃષ્ણે એ સમયે અર્જુનને જે સંદેશ સુણાવ્યો તે ભગવદ્ ગીતાના નામે સુપ્રસિદ્ધ થયો. ગીતાના પ્રથમ અધ્યાયનું શિર્ષક આથી યોગ્ય રીતે જ અર્જુનવિષાદયોગ આપવામાં આવ્યું છે.
