In this cyber age, where nothing really moves without computer and e-mails, English has taken pre-dominance and our Mother Tounge Gujarati has received step motherly treatment from none other than all of us ! Yes, we Gujarati should know how to communicate in our mother tounge with this gadgets. Lot of people often write in our Guest Book : what font do I need to install to see the site ? How do I type in Gujarati Unicode ? We thought that it's high time, we put this for your benefit. If it help, our mission will be fruitful. Long live Gujarati !

Q : How do I type in Gujarati Unicode on my computer ?  I have a windows XP as an operating system on my computer.

Following step will work ONLY if you have Windows XP (it does not matter whether you have Home edition or Professional edition). If you don’t have win XP, please don’t trouble yourself. Keep Win XP Installation CD ready with you.

STEPS

01. Go to Start > control panel > Date Time Language and Regional Options > Regional and language Options.

02. Once open, click on the languages tab and in the bottom half select both check boxes for support for east asian language and right-to left language.

03. A box will pop up that will tell you that you will need some space 230 MB or something. Click ok. And then click apply.

04. It will ask for Windows XP CD. Put in CD drive or give path. At the end of the file copy, it will tell you to restart. Do it.

05. Upon reboot, Go again to Start > control panel > Date Time Language and Regional Options > Regional and language Options.

06. Once open, click on the languages tab and in the top half select Details in Text service and Input languages.

07. Text service and Input Language box has two tabs. In the settings tab in the second half of installed service Add > (in the box that opens select Input language as Gujarati and keyboard as Gujarati) and then click OK. You will be back on 'Text Service and Input Language' window.

(Note: If you don't find Gujarati here, you haven't correctly followed above steps. You can also select Hindi or Devnagari in step 7 the same way.)

08. Now go to Preferences > Language Bar > make sure that first and third checkbox are selcted : 'Show the language bar on the desktop'  and 'Show additional Language bar icon on the desktop'.

(Note: They should be selected by default. If not select them)

09. Go to Key settings > Make following selections

To Turn off CAPS LOCK > Press CAPS LOCK (natural choice !)

Click Hot Keys for Input Language and

Key sequence for Change Input Language : Control + Shift key

(so If you accidentally hit this combination, your language will change!)

10. Click OK. You will be once again on 'Text Services and Input Languages window. Ok and close all windows. You are done !

Verify that it works !

- Open Microsoft word, type K C N …it will show up as kcn.

- Change back to English and verify that same key shows K C N !
